LAB WORK
TREATMENT OPTIONS
- C. trachomatis (sexually-transmitted, urogenital, eye)
- C. pneumoniae (pneumonia)
- C. psittaci (zoonosis predominantly from birds)
- "Atypical" because they lack a cell wall and require special growth media since gram stain is ineffective
TREATMENT OPTIONS
- C. trachomatis
- Doxycycline (for 7 days) OR azithromycin (1 gram single dose)
- Levofloxacin (for 7 days) may be used as an alternative if patient cannot tolerate other options
- Sometimes combined with ceftriaxone since rates of co-infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae are very high
- Doxycycline (for 7 days) OR azithromycin (1 gram single dose)
- C. pneumoniae
- Transmission via aerosolized droplets, typical incubation period is 21 days
- Doxycycline OR azithromycin OR fluoroquinolone
- Duration: 5-14 days
- C. psittaci (for treatment of psittacosis)
- First line: Doxycycline
- Second line: Macrolides (first line for children with mild to moderate infections where tetracyclines are typically avoided)
