TREATMENT OPTIONS
- Virtually all strains produce beta lactamase! DO NOT USE PENICILLIN, AMOXICILLIN, AMPICILLIN
- Choose from the following:
- Augmentin
- Bactrim
- Tetracyclines
- 3rd generation cephalosporins (e.g., Rocephin, cefixime, cefpodoxime)
- Macrolides (azithromycin, clarithromycin)
- Fluoroquinolone (levofloxacin, moxifloxacin)
CLINICAL NOTES
- Common human respiratory tract pathogen causing mucosal infections via spread from airways (up to 5% of healthy adults are colonized); seen in pediatric OM and adult CAP and COPD exacerbations
- Does not typically cause invasive disease, bacteremia is rare (although possible in children with normal immune systems and in immunocompromised adults)
