CONSULT ID FOR ANY STAPH AUREUS BACTEREMIA. PO ANTIBIOTICS ARE INADEQUATE TREATMENT FOR STAPH AUREUS BACTEREMIA AT ANY POINT IN THERAPY. STAPH AUREUS IN A BLOOD CULTURE IS NEVER A CONTAMINANT.
  • Anti-staph penicillins (these are penicillinase-resistant penicillins; bactericidal, rapid killing)
    • nafcillin, oxacillin, dicloxacillin
  • Alternate: cefazolin, cephalexin (cephalosporins are also bactericidal)
  • Other Agents (these are bacteriostatic)
    • Bactrim
    • Clindamycin (CAUTION: some strains have genes that allow for inducible resistance)
    • Vancomycin
    • Tetracyclines
